Final Fantasy XII: Battle System
The Battle system in Final Fantasy XII is setting to be the first in the series to have real time battles. So no more of the random encounters found in past Final Fantasy Games. There are still the standard victory poses, and fanfare after battle song in Final Fantasy XII also, so even though combat is different this time around, we still welcome some old additions from past Final Fantas games.! After a battle, you still get the normal Gill, Exp and Items however now items will be found on the floor where the enemy was located instead of being directed to a menu screen in which you collect any found items, gill etc like in past Final Fantasy games

With that slight introduction on the system, here is some more info on each of the elements of the battle system.
Active Dimension Battle System
Here is the first "new" area of the system to Final Fantasy XII, This is pretty cool system for the fact that when your in battle and all three of your characters are defeated, in past Final Fantasy games, you would get the game over screen! Well, now you dont, now you are taken back to the field screen, and you can restore your characters or even change them with others. Ofcourse, if all of your characters are defeated (Your whole party) then yes...Game Over!
Long Range Attacking (ATB)
Final Fantasy XII, Long Range Attacking imagesThere comes a time when you need to use Long range based attacks on your enemies, this could be for many reasons, however to be able to do so you need to be within range of the enemy first. The ATB comes into play, and like all other Final Fantasy games you cant attack untill the ATB is full. Whilst in battle you will find a red line directing to the enemy. Please click the image for a larger scale version.
The Skills
No Final Fantasy game is complete without giving you various skills to learn. So, in Final Fantasy 12..there are two types of skills, Job skills and Weapon skills.
Job skills are acquired when you level up your Weapons, and weapon skills are acquired by upgrading your weapons, similar in many ways to that of Final Fantasy x's weapons.

The Target Lines
Final Fantasy XII, Ingame Battle imagesWell this is a totally new feature to Final Fantasy XII, and many people have been wondering what its all about. Well they simply display who is attacking who, they come in various colours, so here is some info on them.

Blue: Indicates what / who your are attacking
Green: Indicates an item is being used for that target
Red: Indicates who is taking the attack from the enemy
Pink: Indicates support effects like cure, potion.
Menu & Commands
Final Fantasy XII, Menu And Commands imagesThe main menu consists of 4 commands: Attack, Magic/Technique, Gambit, Item. Some players may have additional commands to suit their job such as "Barrage" (Ranger Skill) for Fran. Gambit is one of the 4 main commands in battle, it basically controls the actions of your party given by your leader. A good example would be, one of these Gambit commands is "Just Attack" which just tells your support party to attack. To give Gambit commands to the whole party, you have to select "ON" after selecting the action. You can also select commands for each character manually.
Range Circles
Final Fantasy XII, Range Circles imagesRange Circles are found in all abilites in Final Fantasy XII, from magic, attacks and skills. Thie picture shown to your left, indicates Fran casting Cura. The character who you select, will be shown with the range circle. Basically, this character and anyone in the circle will now be cured. This works not only for Curing, but everything.

The range circles also determine the range of your battle area's, you have two main rings, the inner circle is the area your at risk of the enemyes attack, and the outer circle is safe for long range and curing.
